In 2004 and 2005, a group of neighbors brought about the Tiled Steps at 16th Avenue and Moraga Street. The project transformed the plain concrete steps (vintage 1927) into an art project that attracts thousands of visitors annually. In addition, the unkempt right-of-way adjacent to the stairs was replaced with a vibrant garden that matches the beauty of the steps themselves.
Funds raised by the project support the upkeep of the stairs (e.g., cleaning, replacing broken or missing tiles) and the surrounding garden.
