About the GGHNA
In early 1975, a group of neighbors gathered to talk about what could be done about proposed housing surrounding Grand View Park and the Rocky Outcrop at 14th and Ortega. Over the preceding decade, several homes had already been built on some of the lots . All of the remaining parcels were slated to be cleared of existing native vegetation and rock formations to accommodate new homes.
Thus began the Golden Gate Heights Neighborhood Association (GGHNA), dedicated to preserving the rich native habitat, which was among the last essentially pristine open space in San Francisco. Years of testimony, written letters and reports, and meetings with city officials ultimately succeeded in retaining some of the natural beauty of our very special corner of the world.
Since then, the Association has worked diligently to preserve and enhance the quality of life in our neighborhood. While our primary interest encompasses the area bounded by Kirkham Street to the north, 9th Avenue to the east, Santiago Street to the south and 19th Avenue to the west, our concerns extend to adjoining areas as well. We strive to represent the interests of all of our neighbors, homeowners and tenants alike.
In addition to the above-referenced open space preservation, and routine matters such as parking and traffic and maintenance of parks and other public property, GGHNA has led the way in a number of important initiatives over the past half-century:
- Preventing the construction of water tanks in Golden Gate Heights Park, similar to the ones at the top of Forest Hill above Quintara and Cragmont;
- Spearheading the successful renovation project at Golden Gate Heights Park, including the playground and tennis courts;
- Serving as a de facto fiscal sponsor for the 16th/Moraga Tiled Steps project;
- Continuing oversight of Golden Gate Heights Park, including the dire status of the tree canopy;
- Other neighborhood initiatives, large and small, that come to our attention.
The strength of our voice is a reflection of the number of households we represent. Dues are $10 per household for the calendar year. Join today!
